I am a children’s author, poet, storyteller and voiceover artist, who always loved to read rhyming books and poetry in my early years. I penned some stories that I stored away in a box file sixteen years ago, thinking that one day I would do something with them. Welcome to the World of Felicity Fly was born in 2012. The series has taken me into the final of the People's Book Prize 2014 and 2015.

About Me

I was born in Lancashire where I spent the first twenty two years of my life, before moving to various parts of Yorkshire, where I now live.

As a child I loved to read anything that rhymed. One of my earliest recollections of fun poetry was Spike Milligan’s Granny and also On The Ning Nang Nong.  I love Spike Milligan’s book Silly Verse For Kids.

I was a very quiet, shy child, who would rather have blended in with the wallpaper and fittings. It wasn't until I landed my first job that I was forced to talk or walk! And from that day on, it was difficult for anybody to stop me talking.

I've always had a love of music and used to help the headmaster of my primary school tune the piano. I spent some of my teenage years playing saxophone and percussion with a band and supported a popular indie band at that time called The Chameleons. We played around venues in Lancashire. I did look at little freaky!

I had some ideas for children’s stories when my own children were babies (eighteen years ago). The inspiration for these came from my own experiences as a child and my own children. I used to be scared of anything that moved! I penned some stories and then shut them away in box file, telling myself that one day, I would do something with them...

In 2012, Welcome To The World Of Felicity Fly was born, followed by Felicity Fly Meets Veronica Vac, Felicity Fly In The Garden, and the latest in the series of the picture, rhyming, read along books, is Felicity Fly Meets The Dragon Fruit.

The first three books were illustrated by Julie Omond and the latest book has been a collaboration with Julie Omond's original designs, illustrated by Ric Lumb.

Felicity Fly Meets Veronica Vac and Felicity Fly Meets The Dragon Fruit both have sing along rhyming songs with them. Audio narration of the stories and songs are available via www.felicityfly.co.uk I have staged snippets of storytelling on various BBC Radio programmes, including BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio York, BBC Radio Lancashire, BBC Radio Newcastle and BBC Radio Sheffield.

In 2013, I introduced a national initaitive encouraging children of all abilities to 'have a go' at writing. This gained support, from the then education secretary and in 2015 received the Dame Beryl Bainbridge First Time Author Award. My latest rhyming book edition is a safeguarding book entitled Share Some Secrets, illustrated by Ric Lumb. This book is for children aged five to eight, addressing the difference between good and bad secrets, encouraging children to share their troublesome secret. This is available to listen to via www.sharesomesecrets.com. This publication is also available in the NSPCC library as recommended.

Over the years, I have written a small collection of poems entitled Thoughts and Feelings. I have also written poems for the Yorkshire Women of Achievement, in aid of Sue Ryder Care and write bespoke poems too. I can write about any topic and really love the challenge of bringing words to life!

Poetry

After writing poetry for the past twenty years, I was encouraged to share some of my work. I have a small collection of poems and I write bespoke poetry on any topic for any occasion.

Here are some examples:

'A good sport'

Christina wrote a most beautiful poem and then read it for us at a charity event held in memory of our son. It summed him up exactly and was just perfect in supporting the aims of the charity established in his name, to assist talented young people in sport. His friends left the event clutching their copies of the poem, taking them home to add to their memory boxes. Poems and Pictures is a very special way to commemorate and share a special event. Thank you, Christina.

Women of Achievement (Sue Ryder Care)

This poem was written for the Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards 2012, which was held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, in aid of Sue Ryder Care. I will be writing another poem for the event this year.

"I gave Christina a pretty scant brief on what I wanted her to try and express, where I had struggled to put the right words together following the birth of my granddaughter. Christina very promptly and efficiently came back with the perfect poem summarising my sentiments exactly - as well as resorting me to tears too! This made the perfect gift and my daughter treasures the poem, which now has pride of place in her home. I would strongly recommend Poems & Pictures to anybody who wants that very special message conveyed, but can't always quite find the right words to express their emotions".
